Information is a catch-all term for any kind of useful data. We need it for education, research and development, decision making and doubtlessly in all other aspects of our daily lives. With the advent of technology, the information became available in many formats including electronic, digital and online in addition to the traditional print format. Although the generation and supply of information has exploded over the recent decades, finding the right information at the right time from the enormous amount of unorganized data has now become quite a challenge.
Luckily for us, there are agencies that are exclusively committed towards managing information so that relevant information is made timely available to the needy. Such agencies are called libraries and information centers. A library or information centre searches, locates and evaluates information from different sources. The task of an information centre is not only confined to selecting, ordering and acquiring information, but also processing and organizing it so that the users make the best of the gathered information. The work done in such agencies require special knowledge, skills and training. The profession concerned with these specialized tasks is known as Library and Information Science (LIS). As libraries and information centers are found everywhere, especially in academic and research institutions, the library and information science professionals are in great demand. The LIS schools are offering various courses on LIS and allied areas like Information Communication Technology (ICT). Universities and leading affiliated colleges are offering Bachelor of Library and Information Science (BLISc) and Master of Library and Information Science (MLISc) courses.
In 1995, the Department of Library and Information Science (DLIS) was set up under the administrative cover of the School of Communication and Information Science (SCIS) but was later de-linked from it. It then became a full-fledged academic department in self-financing sector of the University. The department offers both B.L.I.Sc and M.L.I.Sc courses of two semester duration each. These courses are designed to equip aspiring students with proper knowledge and understanding in the field of Library and Information Science and to provide them special training to develop skills in library and information works and services in the contemporary world. The Department offers the following courses:
