  1. The Mahatma Gandhi University has recently established (during 2011) the Institute for Contemporary Chinese Studies (ICCS) under the Area Studies Scheme of the University Grants Commission (UGC). The ICCS is being envisaged as an inter-disciplinary research intensive centre offering Post-graduate and Research Programmes in Chinese Studies under the Convergence Academia Centres (CAC).
  2. The ICCS has been envisaged as a research Intensive Centre that shall initiate M.Phil and Ph.D. Programmes as well as Innovative M.A. Programmes with specialization in Chinese Studies. The Centre shall initiate M.Phil/Ph.D Programmes with specialization on Chinese Studies. Besides, Twinning programmes, Semester Abroad programmes shall be initiated. In addition, Collaborative Major Research Programmes shall be initiated on themes related to the following areas: Institutional   Innovation; Intellectual Property Rights; Special Economic Zones; Urban Studies; Internationalization of Higher Education; Diaspora Studies; State power in China In the course of time, Centre shall introduce Summer Schools and Short-term programmes to familiarize awareness on the polity, economy, society, culture, tradition and philosophy on both India and China among young minds in both countries.                                                 The Centre shall make strong initiates to introduce Chinese Language teaching component. It is also proposed to set up a Databank on China which will be useful for students, research scholars, teachers and all those who associate with China in the areas of economic growth and trade.

 

Mahatma Gandhi University established the Institute for Contemporary Chinese Studies (ICCS) under the UGC Area Studies Programme with a view to promote Teaching, Research and Collaborative Programme on China.

Programmes and Activities

Course modules on China have been introduced at the Post Graduate level jointly with the School of International Relations and Politics as well as other academic departments. 

A. M.Phil Programme on Chinese Studies has already been initiated and research programmes are being finalized.

  • The ICCS proposes to enter into collaboration with few major institutions from China shortly
  • Semester Abroad Study Programme whereby students from Mahatma Gandhi University will spend one semester in China and will specialize in course modules related to China. On the other hand, Chinese students will spend one semester in Mahatma Gandhi University, focusing on India studies
  • International Conference on the theme Internationalization of Higher Education in India and China: Challenges and Opportunities during 2015

  • Semester Abroad Study Programme whereby students from Mahatma Gandhi University will spend one semester in China and will specialize in course modules related to China. On the other hand, Chinese students will spend one semester in Mahatma Gandhi University, focusing on India studies

Theme: The Rise of China and India: Socio-Cultural Milieu of India and China

Databank on China: The ICCS shall set up an authentic and reliable Database on China. The Database will provide knowledge and information on all aspects of Chinese society that will be useful to students, research scholars, academics and policy makers. Besides, the Database will be beneficial to all stakeholders such as industries, researchers, NGO’s and media.

Awareness Campaign on China: The ICCS shall initiate a variety of programmes that shall generate academic, intellectual and practical knowledge on Chinese society. It shall be done through publication of booklets, monographs, essay competition, quiz competition, among others.

 Expected outcome

  • The teaching programmes envisaged during the XIIth Plan period shall generate a pool of young scholars who will be capable of undertaking genuine research on Chinese society, economy and foreign policy.
  • Chinese Language teaching initiative will equip the students and researchers with the capacity to pursue original research work.
  • Collaborative research programmes, essentially modelled in the frame work of Learning from Each other shall provide valuable insights and feedbacks to all stakeholders both in India and China.
  • Outreach programmes shall provide the forum for dialogue on the vital issues and concerns, challenges and opportunities for all stakeholders.
  • Academic mobility (students, research scholars and members of faculty), both inward and outward, shall make the teaching and research meaningful and mutually beneficial.
  • The Database will provide genuine and important information on China to all stakeholders.
