The major objective of the centre is to provide 24 hr high speed web access to the entire student community (both from the university and from the affiliated colleges) for their academic purpose and to connect them to various search engines and data base systems. It is also envisaged to develop this centre as a nodal place for computer based research applications for researchers from the entire state.
Present Activities of the Centre (Stage I)
The centre became operational from the afternoon of December 2, 2009 with its inauguration by Hon.’ble Minister for Education and Culture, Shri. M.A. Baby. The centre is presently equipped with one server level computer attached to 20 user terminals, one printer and a scanner. These terminals have access to internet and to all the online journals and search engines available at the University library under the UGC Infonet programme. Through this programme, the University has access to more than 4000 online journals in science and social science, and databases. In addition, an important search engine in science subjects, the SciFinder, published by the American Chemical Society, is also available at the moment.
The centre is managed fully by the research students of this campus. A student coordinator and a team of students work on shift basis. Membership in the Web Centre is open to the students and research scholars of this University and the affiliated colleges.
GENERAL RULES for Users
Membership in the Web Centre shall be open to the students and research scholars of this University and colleges affiliated to this University.
The admission to the Web Centre is restricted to the members only.
Members must produce the valid ID card issued by the University / College and endorsed by the Centre each time they wish to enter the Web Centre.
Users will be allotted computer systems by the Research Scholar–in-Charge on producing their ID Card and recording the details and signature in the Log Register.
Members should strictly adhere to the directions given by the Research Scholar-in-Charge for the smooth functioning of the Web Centre.
The use of the Internet and access to Online journals are restricted for academic purposes only and the same should be in accordance with the Cyber Laws.
Users are not permitted to use computer systems and peripherals without proper allocation from the Research Scholar-in-Charge.
The maximum time allotted to a user on a system is 60 minutes. Users may be permitted to continue their use if no other user is in queue.
More than one user is not permitted to use a single machine without special permission.
Users are not allowed to exchange machines allotted to them.
The Research Scholar-in-charge will help users get started, but they may not be able to provide individual instruction. Users are encouraged to explore on their own.
Users will not be provided with specific storage quota in the computer systems. Hence users should not leave any personal data on any computer system, these will be deleted.
Users are directed to strictly follow the Copyright Rules and the Terms and Conditions of publishers while accessing online journals. Publisher’s Terms and Conditions are available at the respective sites.
Violation of Copyright Rules will lead to the denial of access of online publication by the publishers to our University. Hence such violation from the part of any user will be seriously viewed by the University.
Accessing/Downloading of all articles from a journal issue is a violation of Copyright Rules. Usually, accessing/downloading of 4-5 articles from a journal issue is the fair use as per the Copyright Rules.
The information obtained from the online journals and databases should in no way be passed on or shared with industrial organizations or other commercial organizations.
Access to online journals is provided using a Virtual Private Networking and hence users should not make any alterations on the dialer settings.
Usage of the computer and/or Internet should not jeopardize the security of access of the computer network or other networks on the Internet or elsewhere.
For all kinds of printing requirements, user may seek the assistance of Research scholar-in-charge.
The documents for printing should be properly edited and formatted by the users themselves.
All searches and printing must be completed 10 minutes before the closing of the Web Centre.
Members should observe silence within the Web Centre.
Members should not engage in conversation in any part of the Web Centre so as to cause annoyance / disturbance to any other users.
Smoking, spitting and/or any other misconduct is prohibited within the Web Centre.
Use of mobile phone within the Web Centre is not permitted.
Members shall not make any damage in the hardware / property of the Web Centre or alter any changes in the configuration of the computer systems and network. They will be responsible for any such damage caused by them and shall be required to pay the penalty imposed upon them by the Coordinators / Monitoring Committee.
Upon any infringement of the Web Centre rules, members shall forfeit the privileges of admission and membership of the Web Centre.
The Monitoring Committee / Coordinators reserve the right to suspend the membership of any member found misbehaving inside the Web Centre.
A Membership Register should be maintained with details of member such as name, category, address, contact number along with the unique Member No allotted by the Web Centre.
Day-wise Internet Log Register has to be maintained. Log-in time and log-out time with the signature of the user should be recorded in the Log Register.
If required, necessary assistance for the use of the Internet and access to online journals is to be provided by the Research Scholar-in-Charge.
Printing is a chargeable service. Proper receipts should be issued to the members.
A separate Printer Log Register should also be maintained for recording daily opening meter reading, closing meter reading etc.
The details of service charges collected daily should be transferred to the Receipt Register. The Receipt Register should be maintained properly.
Adequate care should be taken by Research Scholar-in-Charge to maintain the confidential nature of server, passwords etc.
The Membership and Admission to the Web Centre, Working hours, Administration and Services offered, etc. shall be as per the Regulations of the Web Centre.
