A Multi disciplinary Academic Convergence Initiative into the Science of Music
Honorary Director : Sri. M.R.Unni
Inter-University Centres are established within the Universities in Kerala for centrally providing state of the-art facilities for researchers working in different Universities within the State. The Inter University Centres are interdisciplinary centres for cutting edge research across disciplines. The participating departments could carry out common research programmes synergizing available academic expertise in the Universities and research Institutes within Kerala. Post Graduate and PhD Programmes, Short term programmes for high-achieving students, Visiting Faculty Programme are some of the major programmes envisaged in these Centres. Twelve Inter University Centres have been established in the Universities in Kerala in niche areas and MahatmaGandhiUniversity has four such Centres.
In addition to the existing Inter University Centres, the University has now established an Inter University Centre for Studies in Science of Music. The research aims to understand everything about music: it's basic structure; it's biological, emotional and psychological effect on humans and the brain; it's healing and altering potential; and its function in the evolutionary process. By learning more about music, we can learn more about ourselves. Music helps scientists understand complex functions of the brain and opens up treatments for patients who are recovering from strokes or suffering with Parkinson's. Research even suggests that music may alter the structure of the brain.
The Project
To Develop an internationally renowned research centre in the field of music and science, including specialists in the area of music cognition and evolution
To Nurture and support an intellectually stimulating graduate research environment
To Attract both junior and experienced researchers who have the highest potential for benefiting from the centre activities and contributing to the field
To Facilitate and promote a continual multidisciplinary integration and collaboration of researchers and academic disciplines, both internal and external to the centre
To Provide a forum for focused discussion, in the form of weekly seminars, that brings together a range of experts from different disciplines and with different backgrounds and promotes interdisciplinary collaboration and debate of current relevant research in the field
To Encourage new collaborative research teams to undertake high quality multi-disciplinary research, incorporating current technological and scientific advances in areas such as neuroanatomy, brain imaging and the biomedical effect of music
To design an international and multi-lingual environment
To ensure researchers in the centre have access to the best of innovative technologies by provision of extensive modern facilities, including a state-of-the-art recording studio, sound booth and relevant software packages, to enable the above.
Programmes & Goals
The Centre will focus on inter disciplinary studies of science of music. The Centre shall develop new knowledge about music, music education, music therapy, and related areas through scholarly inquiry.
The Centre will be centrally provided with state-of-the-art facilities accessible for the researchers and other interested groups working in different Universities. The Centre shall offer innovative educational, consultative, and other support programs to foster research, teaching, and to guide curricular decisions.
The Centre shall provide space and facilities to develop applications of research to music performance, teaching, therapy, and analysis. The Centre could also be a coordinating institution to promote such research Programmes in the Universities.
Special scholarships may be provided for students interested in pursuing studies in Science of Music.
The Centre shall support research collaborations between faculty and students. The Centre could design Special credit courses in UG and PG levels for the students in any discipline (music, science or social sciences) and encourage such students to take up the credits.
The Centre shall establish and maintain relations with similar research and teaching centers at other academic institutions.
